Cut my vanity!

I'm looking to make some upgrades to my bathrooms and I would like to do them fairly inexpensively. My house was built with the spare parts from every other house in our development. We have ridiculous bathroom vanities that have a shelf over the toilet (one giant piece) which makes any repairs to the guts a giant pain in the batootie. So my question is, can I just cut the shelf off? I don't mind refinishing it but I HATE THAT SHELF!! I also would like to switch out the faucets and update the shower hardware as well. That may be another discussion. I am a very handy woman so just tell me what to get and what to do with it and I am on my way. Thank you so much for your help.

A picture sure would help---the vanity and shelf top are called a 'banjo' top--

are you hopeing to cut just the top?

What is it made of?

It most likely can be cut but for best results probably not 'in place'. Also, how would you finish the cut edge?

If you have to remove to cut perhaps a new top is a better option. A faux marble with integral bowl is can often be found for $50-100.
