Can i remove front panel of tub and replace with wood and tile

I am remodeling my bathroom and am wondering what to do about the tub. Its got an ugly plastic front panel and I am wondering if I could just remove that panel and build a wood "frame" under it, add backerboard, waterproofing, and then tile on top. The tile would go under the lip of the tub on the front. Around the sides of the tub I would remove the glued on wall pieces and tile.
Not sure if its important but this bathroom is in a 1 story concrete slab home.

Is this possible to do or is it a horrible idea?

No reason you couldn't as long as you find a non-destructive way to mount it.

You don't want to be drilling into any parts of the tub surround in my estimation as they are pretty fragile.
