Cabinets or hardwood?

Cabinets or hardwood; Which should be done first? Due to budget issues we have to do one at a time.

Re: Cabinets or hardwood?

Welcome to the forum ras.

Do you mean which should be done first, cabinets or hardwood flooring for a kitchen I assume?

Imo, I would do the cabinets first. Less chance of floors getting damaged. If you do the hardwood flooring first make sure the floors are protected.

Re: Cabinets or hardwood?

If you install cabinets first, put 3\4 plywood under the or they will be short when you do the floor.

I agree, assuming you are going to use 3/4" flooring. The plywood under the cabinets should match the thickness of the flooring. I would add that, to avoid problems, leave that plywood anout 1/4" shy of where you think the cabinet fronts will be. In other words, if the measurement from the back of the cabinet to the front of the toe-kick is 21 inches, install your plywood to 20 3/4".

The cabinets will be short, and you may have a very difficult time installing and/or removing a dishwasher.

I generally like to work top down. That way gravity is not dropping mess on the stuff I've already finished.
