Best choice for hinges?

I'm working on cabinets for our condo and need some advice on concealed hinges. My first intention was to put standard offset hinges (cheap and readily available) but the wife says no, she prefers the concealed type, which I've never fooled with. The cabinets are face-frame and the doors will be Shaker style with 1/2" overlay. From what I've read/seen it seems like the Blum Compact 33 would be a good choice -- comments? Other recommendations?

If you are having doors built have the holes drilled for those hinges.

That's the only way to go since there are a million different types of hinges & they aren't interchangeable.

Re: Best choice for hinges?

I have used the Blum hinges a number of times and like them. My kitchen cabinets (purchased) also have Blum. If you want to make the wife happy, get the Blumotion (soft-close).

Take a good look at your layout and if you need some funky swing angles (such as maybe corners, or 180 degree swings rqd), check that Blum offers hinges with those angles.

I never had a face frame application though. Looking at the Compact 33, I am not too impressed with the robustness of the connection of the fixed side of the hinge to the cabinet. But on a face-frame application, not sure much else you can do.

You can make a jig for repeatably drilling the 35mm hole in the door with a forstner bit.

If we are talking about these hinges, I found jigging up and routering the hole better than drilling.

Re: Best choice for hinges?

I’ve found these fine for my cabinets.. cheap but they work... never had any issues..

If u are doing a lot of doors it would be worth investing or making a jig.. I have only installed about 30 on these hinges in doors I’ve made over the years and never had a jig.. just marked the doors and used a forstner

Thanks! Those look like maybe a good choice. I'll be installing 30 pairs, so a jig probably would be useful if I go with these.

If you have a drill press just set up a corner jig to the table and you'll have those 30 sets knocked out in short order.

I do have a drill press, and will probably do that.

Re: Best choice for hinges?

Maybe it was the bits I have but I always had trouble with them on the drill press. They worked better if you could wobble the hand drill a little.
For the drill press I modified a spade bit to have a tiny point.
