Bathtub nailing flange

From what I understand, wood furring strips should be used above the nailing flange so that cement board will lay flush over the flange... is it critical that the cement board be flush against this flange or is it okay if there is a small gap between them? In other words, how important is it that the cement board is sitting against the nailing flange where it overlaps it? or can it be slightly sticking out and not touching the flange?? Thanks

That works fine if the effected wall(s) don't meet up with a continuing wall.

Just stop the board above the flange, seal the crack and call it good. Then use thinset to fill the void when installing the tile. It's done like that all the time.

You could also notch the back of the board to accommodate the flange of the tub.
