Backsplash on Painted Sheet Rock
Can I put a kitchen backsplash on a latex painted wall (sheet rock)?
If so does the wall need to be scuff sanded first or a primer applied?
I will be using a natural stone tile and natural stone mortar/thinset.
Also any suggestions on grouting over metal tile inserts, how to keep them clean when grouting? I'm thinking of using painters tape to cover them.
Thin set is pretty tenacious in it's grabbing ability but it won't hurt to scuff up a semi gloss or gloss paint.
If the metal inserts are smooth and you're using an unsanded grout, you shouldn't need to cover the metal. Sanded grout might scratch the surface and get stuck into any design in the metal.
Clean off the sanded grout as soon as directed. Too long on the tile is a bear to remove. Unsanded grout is much more forgiving in that way.
Used a modified thinset designed for natural stone. Roughing up the paint is the min I would do. I would sand the walls then prime with a good PVA primer. Let it cure and then tile. I have had great success with this method.
