Why is there a manhole above the sewer line?

I was digging to the house main sewer line where there's root issues and found a manhole size object above the sewer line. Not sure if it's a manhole, the top doesn't appear to be removable. The inside is empty about 2 feet down. House was built in 1920.

Any idea what it is?

Problem posting photo.

Sounds like a drywell. Or is a septic tank below? Sometimes folks will put a riser above a cleanout with a cover over it. Less digging when it's time to pump.

Post a few more times and the site will let you post your pics

There's no cleanout that I can see. I'll keep digging to see how far down it goes.

Hard to say if the sewer was there when the house was built, I can check with the city on Monday.

I think you got it right Yodaman, looks like a graywater drain and should be safe to remove. I dug down to the sewer line and here's a photo of the 55 gallon drum. The pipe connected to the drum is pointed to the garage. Garage had plumbing installed years ago, probably replacing the old graywater drain.
It's in the way of the sewer line repair and will be removed.

Wow, lines running in all directions. Must of been fun trying to dig out.
I have a similar set up that handles the runoff from the tool shed.
