I would just purchase a new nut and gasket and not replace the trap adapter. If you replace it you will be making this into a major type job. It would even be helpful to see the gasket you currently have. Some trap adapters were 1.5 " with a 1.5 inch by 1.25 " gasket to the eye this gasket is a fat one.

Other trap adapters may be 1.5 inch to 1.25 inch with a 1.25 inch nylon gasket. The third choice is 1.5 by 1.5 if the chrome trap is 1.5 inch.
