Upstairs bathroom odors smelled in basement

I have an upstairs and basement bathroom right underneath. When the upstairs bathroom is in use for #2 purposes, you can smell the odors down in the basement bathroom spreading into the recreation room attached and is very embarrassing around company. What do you think the issue is, methane and or a sulfur smell. But more so the methane smell itself. What could be the issue?

Re: Upstairs bathroom odors smelled in basement

Troubleshooting sewer smells can be hard to pinpoint. Could be complex like a cracked vent pipe or something simple like a trap gone dry or unsealed pipe going to the basement. Have to investigate a little more.

Do you have a central hvac system that may be broadcasting the smell by the return vent?

Do you have any floor drains in the basement that the trap may be dried out and letting the smell through?

Does the upstairs bathroom have an exhaust fan?
Are you running air conditioning?
When the ac is running the natural air flow is down, so the air in that bathroom could be following the plumbing penetrations into the basement. They often cut generous holes for all pipes.

Leaking wax ring, blocked or missing vent.

You could get the same effect with a furnace or boiler that uses the basement as the source of combustion air. If the basement is slightly negative compared to the upstairs, it could be pulling upstairs bathroom air and odors down stairs, particularly if those generous sized holes are in an uninsulated interior wall stud bay or vertical bulkhead.

Do you have an exhaust fan in the upstairs bath and does it make a difference if people use it versus not ?
