Toilet Tank Doesn't Always Fill

Hi guys,

I've got an issue with my toilet:

When I flush a line, the soiled water drains well, but the fill valve stalls and the water keeps running into that tall metal tube but the tank never fills up. If I move the fill valve's float up and down a few time, almost as to dislodge it, then let it be again, it usually ends up filling up afterwards.

Does this seem like a faulty fill valve? Can it be fixed or do I need to buy a new one?

Any help is appreciated.

Best to replace the fill valve. I've actually seen this happen with new valves right out of the box.....
It's a small investment and a few minutes of labor

You can clean those, but for $7 I would replace the fill valve.

If you want to clean, turn the supply water off to the tank. Remove the blue cap on the fill tube (it twists off with a quarter turn) Hold a cup over the fill tube, turn the supply on and let it flush. Turn the supply off, put the cap back on , turn the supply on. You should be good to go.

Good advice. I just wanted to isolate the problem with this post. Definitely replacing the fill valve will rectify the issue?

From your description, it may be that your flapper valve is not seating correctly, allowing water to leak out into the tank. Check the flapper before you replace the fill valve.

You mentioned the float hangs up. IMO, this is fixed by replacing the valve. For some reason, they sometimes loose alignment and don't slide well. I've never tried to figure out why, I just replace the valve.
Also, verify nothing is getting in the way of the float.

I don't think the flapper is the issue since playing with the fill valve allows the tank to fill. Once it's full, theres no water leaking, so I don't think there's a problem with the seal.

This was what I did when the water in my tank just kept flowing but the tank never filled up. It was a simple quick fix and it worked.

Unfortunately that didn't work for me but replacing the entire valve did the trick. It was 23$ for me

Atleast it works now.

Re: Toilet Tank Doesn't Always Fill

That's what it was. Everything minus the flapper, overflow pipe and tank lever. So essentially just the fill valve.
