toilet still leaking from tank to bowl

Hello to all,

You guys have been great helping me fix problems, so....

I heard the toilet kick-on for 3-4 sec's, then cut off. So I put some dye in the tank; later the dye was in the bowl.

Replaced the flapper [which always fixes this], but dye still made it to the bowl but not near as much over the same time period. I completely flushed out the prior dye before doing it again.

I noticed the flush valve gasket had a few very, very small pieces of it gone. Would this be a contributor?

Finally, both flappers had the small cork-floats, and the one removed had some "slime/discoloration" to it, but I have changed a lot worse.

Thank you and pls let me know if you have any questions?

Regards, tstex

Re: toilet still leaking from tank to bowl

Did you happen to install a newer adjustable flapper? Is the rim of the exit clean without scum or burrs? You may have to play with the adjustment on the flapper to ensure it is attacking the seat squarely. It's the only place where water goes into the bowl, except with the fill tube. If it is pushed too far into the overflow tube, it will siphon water and cause intermittent on and off of the valve.

Or the seat of the valve that the flapper seats to is worn or pitted. Remove tank and replace flush valve.

Re: toilet still leaking from tank to bowl

Thank you Larry.

Non-adjustable flapper....no burrs and I learned from you guys to really clean-up the seating area of any slime, debris or other.

Now the water does come real close to overflow pipe, about 1/8" below. I followed the instruction and set the fill-valve delta to the std 1", but it looks like the overflow pipe was cut a little too short....does this make sense?

Thank you

Re: toilet still leaking from tank to bowl

as noted rj, the seat was neither pitted nor "scummed-out"...

Re: toilet still leaking from tank to bowl

No, the overflow tube should not have been cut at all and could be a problem. You may have to replace the central flush valve all together if it was truly cut.

If and when you do, buy an extra set of tank-to-bowl bolts and nut kits. That way you can install (from the top) the bolt through a rubber washer with a rubber washer, brass washer and nut on the underside of the tank alone. This will waterproof the tank totally (except for the fill valve). THen you can install the tank on the bowl as a unit using a metal washer and nut on the bottom of the bowl. Just makes things simpler.

Re: toilet still leaking from tank to bowl

we have a total of 4 toilets and 2 of them seem to have the taller overflow pipes and two of them shorter, as the one in question. I'll take a 12" plastic ruler and measure all the overflow pipes and see what I get? All of the toilets are exactly the same so that part is standardized.

I'll post back when I arrive home - thank you...

If the flush valve isn't original there's a good chance the overflow tube was cut for a good reason. Generic ones are often too high. They'll allow water to run out of the hole for the handle before it hits the overflow tube. So if it's too tall and isn't cut the next time the fill vavle decides to run you'll flood the place.

Re: toilet still leaking from tank to bowl

Going on the premise that all the toilets are identical and some tubes are cut short. I don't think it is a matter of overflowing out the handle hole, but we'll see with pictures or something definitive. Could be the tubes are aftermarket, but should have been cut at the same height as the others if needed.
