Toilet seat not sitting properly

Moved into a house and the bolt holes that attach the toilet seat to the bowl aren't aligned properly, so the toilet seat sits off to the side. Does anyone have any advice for how to align the seat properly so it won't move off to the side? I've tried tightening the seat in a variety of ways.

Re: Toilet seat not sitting properly

Assuming the problem is the toilet and not the seat, take the seat off and see if the holes in the toilet look symetrical to each other. It may be that the toilet was mis-cast; if so I'm not sure if there is much to do about it. They are usually larger than the seat bolts so you might be able to adjust it as best you can. If the nuts on the seat bolts keep coming loose, try some teflon tape on the threads.

Yeah, that's definitely the problem– the toilet was mis-cast and the bolt holes in the bowl simply don't line up. I just wasn't sure if anyone out there had maybe run into this problem and come up with a good fix.

The thing that gets me is, how did someone have this toilet for years and not notice? Or care?

Replace the toilet. If more than a few years old it is probably a water waster.
