Toilet seat misalligned - won't stay up

I have a toilet seat that won't stay up. The bolt on the right hand side is definitely closer to the tank than the one on the left, and this misalignment prevents the seat from leaning against the tank, causing it to fall forward all the time.

I can't tell whether the right hand side bolt is closer to the tank because the tank is on an angle or because the bolt holes aren't quite even (the difference is very slight).

I have already tried loosening the seat bolts and pulling it forward as much as possible. There is a little bit of play, but not enough.

Is there any play in the tank? If I loosen it, can I get 1/4" by pushing it back and re-tightening?

Yes, you can adjust the angle of the tank a little bit by loosening the bolts for the tank. Usually the tank is set square to the base and the wall. Sometimes toilets are not assembled or set right. Be careful because if you loosen the tank bolts too much, you can cause the tank seal to leak. You can also easily break the toilet base by over tightening the tank bolts.

Probably best to get another brand/model toilet seat. Some brands/model just won't stay up on certain toilets.

Had to change one out for customer about a year ago. The only thing that I know of that he ever did for himself. He did nothing wrong. It just wouldn't stay up.

Simple fix; just use a little piece of Velcro between the lid and tank.

Perhaps there is a tilt to your house that you are unaware of…, just kidding.

Perhaps the seat itself is improperly made. Before taking the toilet apart or replacing it, try swapping the seat with another in the house (if it is different) and see if that solves the issue. If one is not available, get an el cheapo at a home center.

If you do have to go the replacement route, I suggest the Kohler Cimarron (Lowe’s). I have replaced all three of my toilets with this model and have not had any issues whatsoever.

I would bet that the tank is not straight to the toilet. Measure from the bolt holes for the seat to the wall and see if they are the same.
