Toilet flushes twice, overflows easily

Our upstairs toilet flushes oddly. You press the lever and it drains for longer than I'd expect, then the bowl fills most of the way again all while still draining, then drains entirely a second time before filling and the tanks fills. Before I do anything drastic, is this something easy to diagnose? It it just a bad toilet, or maybe something to do with the drain's air intake?

It's our second toilet and doesn't get much use, but overflows far too easily if it does get used.

Thanks.

Re: Toilet flushes twice, overflows easily

Some toilets do flush twice, so that may be normal, idk. However, the overflowing issue is not.You may have a partial blockage somewhere.

Try the bucket test. Fill two 1 gallon buckets full of water and dump in bowl fast. If it starts to overflow or can't handle it, you have a blockage somewhere. Maybe due to the fact it's seldom used. Possibly old toilet paper hardened or something is creating a restriction either in the toilet itself or downstream.

Hope you get it figured out soon beengone.

What brand of toilet? Has it always done this? Post a picture of the mechanism in the tank.

Are the kids missing any toys? Is anyone missing a toothbrush or makeup applicator?

I'll get some info. It's done it since we bought the house a while back and I'm just now dealing with it.

I'll try the bucket test listed above and maybe will run a snake into it to see if that's it. I'll also get a brand and pic of the mechanism. May not be for a couple days.

Absolutely correct. Sometimes you can suck it out w/ a wet vac. Don't flush baby wipes. Do you use Charmin?

We never flush wipes. Unless something went down it on accident (or before we bought it) it must be something else. Don't usually use charmin. Again, it's been since we bought the house and that's been a few years.

Pretty sure that you have a blocked vent pipe. Snake the vent. Yes, that probably means getting up on the roof with your snake.
Who knows, could be a squirrels nest.

I still say that you have a partial clog. Either snake the toilet or open the clean-out.

Re: Toilet flushes twice, overflows easily

Small update:

It's a Mancesa.
The vent pipe is a very good thought and a likely culprit. Sadly, it's not very accessible. The clowns that did the roof before we bought it terminated the pipes below the roof in the attic. I'll have to crawl up there when I get some time and check out the pipe. I bought a boot and extension for it a while ago, but haven't made the effort to poke it through the roof. Maybe I"ll do both at once. Might be a while before I have an answer.

Thanks for all the help.

If it vents in the attic, may be better if is plugged, that's dangerous.

Definitely would have liked to see a picture of it to see what the problem was.
