Toilet bowl won't empty when water supply is off.

I'm replacing a toilet in Florida and I'm seeing a phenomenon I haven't seen before. When I shut off the water supply, the bowl won't empty. The tank basically empty but the bowl stays full no matter what. Turn the water on and the toilet works like normal. Ordinary looking toilet. No idea what is going on, but don't want to lift up this toilet with a bowl full of water. Help please.

After flushing the toilet to empty the tank, use a plunger to force most of the remaining bowl water down the trap.

If you want to pull more water out, you can use a turkey baster or a wet/dry vacuum.

You can bucket flush the bowl to remove the maximum amount of water. Then it's time to bail using any method above or small cup.

Ditto on using the shop vac. I do this every time I have to change a toilet which results in almost no water mess when the toilet is pulled out.

The bowl is doing what it is supposed to do - it is acting just like the trap under a sink. All sorts of methods described above. I've just used a plunger then mop out what's left.

If you do use a shop vac, remove the filter first.

Or hope you don't have to spit-spit.

Ya know....the other night I got pretty drunk, went to sleep, and dreamed I drank the largest Margarita in the world.

(Got a little worried the next morning when I found salt all around the toilet rim)

I would not self-siphon out of a toilet bowl.

I have a siphon hose from my aquarium days that has a little squeezy bulb on it that you can squeeze to pull water into the hose and get the siphon action going.

After being on forums for a few years I've determined that siphoning is possibly rated in the top 10 of the human knowing very little about. That's kind of scary. Spit-Spit

Re: Toilet bowl won't empty when water supply is off.

I use a nice big rubbermaid to put it in and carry it out. First I just move it to the tub right next to it to get most of it out. I can lift it pretty level without spillage and then hover, but realize as I age I will have to find other ways. I'd siphon a tank reluctantly, but in case I'm not quick enough certainly won't be siphoning the bowl just thinking about years of crap (literally) stuck to the sides of the trap.

The toilet is designed to block out sewer/septic gases from entering the room. I get as much out as I can with a measuring cup and then lift the toilet and dump what is remaining into a wash basin on the floor.
