Re: Is there a temporary fix for a tiny hole in cast iron sewer line?

Hi. I'm new here. I had almost the same problem in my residential rental, except mine was a crack running through the joint. Solved it with a wide self-fusing tape, wrapped several times. It's been there 3+ years, even though it was supposed to be temporary!

I can't post a link since I'm new here, but if you search for self-fusing plumbers tape you will find what I'm referring to. It's been part of my home repair stuff ever since.

Thanks! I actually went to the orange big box yesterday and the guy in tje plumbing aisle showed me that product, which i had never seen before. I bought a roll of it, and a stick of JB Weld. I plan to trythe JB Weld first, but if that doesnt hold, I plan on using that tape. Thanks again for the tip.

Also a wire brush that looks like a toothbrush for tight space. Brush off rust and paint. Citrus grease remover for any oil on the cast iron. Disposable gloves for working with epoxy. Use your hand to push first layer of thin epoxy over the repair area for good adhesion. Then second thicker layer. Cast iron crack can continue to open up but this kind of repair could last as well. Wait couple of hours to make sure JB weld is cured. I did have uncuring jbweld.

Do we really think this pipe won't spring another leak a week after this one is stopped
Is there any consideration on just changing it out?

Neal - i am definitely planning on changing it out, but there is a tenant in the property who is moving shortly. Once they move, I will have my plumber replace it with PVC. I am looking for a temporary solution to hold me over until they move out.
