Sump Pump Bump Thump

I recently had to re-route the discharge pipe for my sump pump to accommodate an addition. Previously it went straight up about eight feet and out the sill directly above the pit.

Now it has to go up at an angle for about eight feet and then over about eight feet on a horizontal to exit. Since making the change there is a strong hammering in the pipe for about two seconds after the pump shuts off. I have a check valve on the line, but it is located down just above the pump itself. Is that part of the problem? Is there a better place for the check valve?

Re: Sump Pump Bump Thump

The check valve is correctly placed, within a few feet of the sump pump.

Not sure whether this will fix the problem but the "horizontal" 8 foot section would be better off with some slope down on the way out of the house all the way to the open end.

Thanks Allen, but actually there is a slight drop in the horizontal section towards the outside, which I built into the design in order to make sure that water drains out to prevent possible freezing in the winter. Maybe I could try to enhance that angle a bit, though I am not sure the electrical panel, joists, and other obstacles in the way would allow me to.

Re: Sump Pump Bump Thump

My sump pump made a pretty loud thump every single time it shut off, it was extremely annoying. I installed a quiet check valve and it made a HUGE difference. It makes no thump at all now, I can barely even tell when it runs. I have had it installed about 3 years with no issue.

Re: Sump Pump Bump Thump

Not a plumber but I'm guessing the extended run created a larger, and therefore heavier, water column that gravity slams back on the check valve, so the mentioned quiet check valve should do it.

My system does not have a check valve. I found that after my sump shut off, about a third of the pit would fill up again. Just after the line goes horizontal, I had installed a Y with about 6" of riser capped by a hose barb fitting for a softener discharge that I ended up not using. With that small air break, I noticed that I no longer get much water draining back into the pit. I doubt it is strictly Code but it seems to work.

Re: Sump Pump Bump Thump

I replaced the old valve with a quiet check valve and the problem is 100% solved. Thanks all.
