Sprinkler blowout - winterize

Hi,
I've seen this topic was discussed before but my setup is different from the other ones I found. I've done this before in my previous house and comfortable with the task provided I familiarize myself with the setup.

I see this inside a box near my city water line. I haven't seen a valve system like this before so wanted to know if you could point me to the right direction on what to open/close and what port to use to blow out the system.
Funny thing is, I don't see any other box in yard beside this. Not sure where the valves are for each zone.

Have a 20 gallon compressor and all adapters. Please advise on a procedure to blowout the system.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Sprinkler blowout - winterize

Do these lines serve only the sprinklers?
I would think you would blow out from where water first enters the sprinkler system.

Bob,
I'm not too sure about that part. This box is right next to the main water line round metal cover. I don't see any other boxes/valves anywhere.

Re: Sprinkler blowout - winterize

To me, it looks like a back-flow preventer in between two shut off valves. I think the line then goes to your home.
Is there a way of back-tracking a sprinkler head nearest to home to see where it might be supplied from?
Can you look at where main water line comes into the home and starts being divided? This might indicate a line to the sprinkler system.

That is backflow preventer and you cant blow down from that. Somewhere someone has put a fitting that will come apart to hook up the compressor.

I looked inside the house and there's just a single water line that comes in and don't remember seeing anything that goes out. I will go take some pictures tonight and post.

Yeah thats a back flow preventer, somewhere between that and where the water line enters your house, there's a set of valves that control each zone of your system, thats where you connect your air line to blow the system out.

The arrow on the back flow shows the direction of the city water to the house.

Re: Sprinkler blowout - winterize

Weirdly that is a badly installed RP back flow preventer. It should not be in the dirt. That back flow can cause water line contamination if it becomes active. When was the last time you had it tested?

Nothing wrong with the installation, but looks like dirt has been allowed to build up in the box, i know i have to clean mine out twice a year-end have it tested yearly.

Re: Sprinkler blowout - winterize

Found this other box nearby that was covered by grass. I think this is what I need. Remove the pvc cap and plug in the air compressor there? So what would be the process for blow out? Do I need to turn off water supply at the backflow preventer?

Thanks in advance.

There should be a setting so you can open up the zones to blow each one out. Its been about 30 years since i have shut one down

Re: Sprinkler blowout - winterize

I've seen plenty of videos. I'm trying to confirm which valves I need to turn off to stop water supply to my sprinkler system. The backflow preventer have 2 valve switches and four ports. I've seen people do different things but what's the right way to blow and shut it off for winter?

Re: Sprinkler blowout - winterize

The ports are for testing purposes only to make sure the backflow is functioning properly. Shutting either valve will cut the flow through the device.
