There are 2 places for certain that people are going to plant trees 1) near the building so they will fall on it and near the sewer system so they do what you just discovered. Arborist, tree nurseries and plumbers just love it.

If I had to guess, the tree behind my house is older than the mainline. It's about 18 inches to 2 feet in diameter, stands 2.5x or 3x taller than my house, and has these stupid helicopter things that fall off and clog my gutters and collect on the roof. Wouldn't surprise me though if the tree was planted after... I wonder what they thought it would grow into.

Helicopter things sounds like a maple tree. They love to get into sewer lines looking for water.

In many instances before air conditioning trees of that nature were planted for summer shade. It was and still is a lack of foresight. Those with just a little foresight put awnings on east and west windows and painted their house white.
