Shower faucet putty vs silicone

I have a this kohler bath faucet: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=sr_1_2&sr=8-2

It does not use a threaded pipe and has obviously been leaking for years. I am new to the house and took it off yesterday. The instructions say to use plumbers putty (which looks like was not used previously) to seal it. It specifically says oil free putty. I went to the local hardware store and showed the instructions to the guy, who then gave me a putty, which appears to have oil in it. Plus it says it has crystallin silica in it which is known to cause cancer. Normally i wouldn't worry about that since this is behind the faucet, however I read that putty is water soluble and I have a 4 year old who takes baths and drinks the bath water. So i am thinking this may get in his bath water.

I would love some thoughts on what would be safe to use here. Also the back of the faucet where the putty would be looks like plastic to me. I will post some photos. Thanks so much.

you can get some that say they are waterproof ready in 30 min, but i would definitely wait the required time to let it fully cure.

Re: Shower faucet putty vs silicone

Do you guys have a favorite brand? I went to look at there are so many. I bought a GE one that said it would be mold free for 7 yrs, but on the back it says that you have to clean it to keep secondary mold at bay. Since this will be behind the shower faucet, I doubt I will be able to really clean it. I am wondering if I should get a aquarium safe one to know it is safe enough, but thought I would ask you guys. Thanks!
