Shower Base/Pan?

I'm converting a small bedroom into a bathroom on my main floor and am not sure what to do with the base of our Shower? Or more accurately, what to put in for a base? It seems very popular to go the schluter systems route or use a pre-cast pan. These look great and easy, but are about $1000 options not including any of the finishing. I'm working on a budget and am wondering if it really is worth it? And I know what people will say regarding a flood and the cost repairing it, however are the more cost effective options? Is the mortar bed just as effective, but more work/less sexy than the new technologies? This is my first shower base so I'd love some opinions before I get to work on it.
