Round holes in bathroom sink drain flange?

I was able to unclog my bathroom sink today, but removing plunger (via pulling out rod in back and pulling up.

I noticed 3 - 4 round holes a bit smaller than a dime, with what looked like cotton or caulk stopped up in them.. should these holes be cleared?

What are those 3 holes for? I can take a picture to show what i mean, if someone on the forum, is not sure what i am talking about.

I can see these whole about a 1/2 below the sink drain with the stopper out.

Assuming your sink is the type has overflow slots or holes in the basin, yes those holes should cleared. They are passages to allow the overflow water into the drain.

It's probably excess plumbers putty.

Thank you. I can see the putty under the sink too.. I am afraid if i clear the holes, the water will just go down into the putty below and come back up.. but at least i know what this is for now.

It has been that way 10 years, as we bought the house last year and i assume no harm has happened with those gooped up so far.

The holes are supposed to lead to the drain. Not like they dump onto the floor or cabinet below.

It can happen. A not so handy neighbor of mine tried installing a new bowl type sink w/o overflow. Used an overflow type drain in it. Called me to help figure out why it was leaking.

It's sometimes hard not to laugh.
