replace tub drain

I would like to start using an old fashioned rubber plug for bathtub drain. So I took off the top of the one that was installed and was met with a stem that poked quite a ways up above the deck. What can get or do to use the plug of my dreams?

Re: replace tub drain

I believe that the stem sticking up should unscrew from the drain fitting. I believe it actually belongs inside the metal stopper but time has taken its toll.

Thank you! I haven't needed to know this before, but glad to now, just in case.

Re: replace tub drain

Yes, luckily the stem is "D" shaped so the vice grip had something to grip.
Now, actually I would like to put a strainer in there to catch hair. The opening is 1- 5/8" I guess I need a strainer of the same size, maybe https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VA6I32...a-306440160361
