Prevent leaking in toilet line supply line?

I've just replaced the fill valve on a toilet and after hand-tightening (firmly) the coupling nut, I'm getting leaking. I've attached a photo. It appears there is a metallic washer which surprised me, I expected something elastic, but I'm not a plumber so I don't know. I also wiped the interior of the tank to make sure no debris got between the tank and the rubber shank washer that came with the kit. Photo attached.

Am I missing something? Seems if I wrench-tighten this I could crack the plastic.

Thanks!

That appears to be the end of an old chrome hard supply line or a polybutle supply line that someone jerry rigged a compression nut for.
Discard it. Go to Home Depot, Lowe's or any hardware store. Purchase a braided flexible toilet supply as shown below. Be sure that you purchase toilet supply line and not a faucet supply.

Measure before you go. They come in certain lengths and cannot be shortened. Shortest is 9".

They use rubber washers and O rings to seal and are easy to install. God's gift to plumbers.

Hand tightening depends on each hand. I got a fair grip but also give it a quarter turn with a wrench. My hand tight is when I can't turn the nut by hand.
