Plumbing: Done Wrong, shower diverter

Hello folks, looking for some guidance for a non-expensive fix here.

For last few weeks I've had a very slow drip leak from the ceiling below the tub, luckily the ceiling is gutted for renovation, so I wasn't accumulating mold.

I tear into the back of the shower and find the spout is on a brass nipple and the nipple is twisted into a 90 degree brass dog ear fitting that goes directly to the shower. The nipple into the dog ear fitting was leaking, replaced both, plus the spout.

Now with my new spout, apparently there's more flow into the 1/2 inch line (just pex'd the full run at same time) and/or the new spout is restrictive and I'm getting spray from the shower when I have only the spout on.

Seems clear a dog ear and spout diverter alone is not the proper way to set this up, only basic gravity is keeping the water from coming out the top, or WAS, I should say.

What can I do here? I don't want to spend hundreds here on a whole new setup, as I'm still funding the ceiling remodel.

TIA,
Jason

P.S. Another wonderful joy of this design is if you haven't yet hooked up the hot water, and test the cold..... back-flow. Lucky I don't have a finished basement.

Remove the spout and try it. If that resolves the issue, your new spout is restricting the flow. Hopefully you did not use PEX for the tub spout connection?

All tub spout diverters and some shower faucet built in diverters use gravity, with the path up to the shower head fully open at all times.

Thank you folks, the kind people at Delta have been nice enough to rush ship us a new faucet for the one I had cross threaded in the first place. Should be here in the next day or two.
