Paper product behind backer board?

Iím a homeowner replacing my shower/tub and just had the inspector come out to look at the rough plumbing. It passed and next is the backer board so I asked him if the city requires plastic sheeting as a vapor barrier behind the backer board. He said a vapor barrier is needed but not plastic. They require a felt/tar paper.

This threw me because Iím only familar with 4+mm plastic, like visqueen, being used if a vapor barrier is required. I asked him for a specific product but he couldnít recall it. The only thing I could think of was felt paper that I use under roofing shingles. He said ďyeah like that.Ē

Is anyone familar with the type of paper product this inspector is talking about that is meant to be used behind backer board? I really donít want to install 30lb roofing felt paper behind my backer board on the vague requirements of a city inspector and find out itís wrong. Is there a plumbing specific paper product that i should be using?

Thanks!

Re: Paper product behind backer board?

I don't know why that would be a code issue for him to comment on, but felt "is" a vapor barrier, although archaic, and 6 mil plastic is easier to handle. Nothing wrong with using the felt in order to pacify the inspector. We don't know where you are located since your profile is incomplete, so it is difficult for us to draw proper conclusions.

Regard the face of the backer, put what ever they like behind it.
Not much difference between wet wall or make the water run to the floor where it causes as much damage.
