Need Help With PVC to PVC Drainpipe into Cast Iron

I am installing a new sink. The new PVC drainpipe is 1.5" OD.

When the old sink came out, the existing trap and fittings were thrown out, but if I recall properly, it was also PVC. Now I do remember the old drain pipe was not chemically welded into the PVC in the wall, it was just fitted snugly over (or possibly into) the PVC fitting show in the image below.

That fitting you see is a PVC reducer, (2" ID to 1.5" ID as far as I can tell) fitted into a cast iron drain pipe. I am reluctant to mess with the existing reducer (the one situated in the cast iron pipe) as this place is about 60 years old and everything you mess with has consequences

Anyway, I am wondering, can I get away with just snugly fitting my new 1.5" OD PVC drain snugly into that reducer (it slides all the way in and seems nice and snug), and maybe packing the outside diameter of the reducer with plumbers putty? Would this be sufficient to prevent leaking under the sink?

I am wary of using PVC adhesive as I'll have a real mess on my hands if something else goes wrong later on, (this apartment has been a nightmare!) and I would like to maintain the ability to break it all apart again without having to cut and replace everything, or god forbid, have to cut into the walls or mess with that cast iron pipe.

Thanks!

You need to go get a 1.5 inch pvc trap adapter it will glue into the wall and allow you to fasten the trap so it can be removed if needed.

Not a plumber but I think you will also need a stub of pvc pipe glued into that fitting in the wall, and then the trap adapter will be glued to that stub. Your new p-trap will then go inside that trap adapter.

Not necessary. They seller trap adapters with a hub on it's end (to be fitted over a pipe) and adapters with a street connection (to be fitted into a hub fitting), that's why Ghostmaker showed a picture of a trap adapter with a street/spigot connection.
