Navien Tankless H/W Heater Clicking Sound Help

Navien CR-A 240 Tankless Hot Water Heater installed in 2010.
Making an unusual clicking sound as heard in linked video.

Has anyone heard anything like this?

Sound appears to be coming from inlet flow adapter/flow adjustment valve/flow adjustment v/v pipe.
Noise begins at 00:15 (sec) in video part 2.

It appears louder on video than in real life.
Unit drained and filters cleaned.

sure sounds like the solenoid for the adjustable flow inlet valve...

what all applications are you heating with this unit?

Peace

Re: Navien Tankless H/W Heater Clicking Sound Help

Thanks for the speedy reply.

It's our home water heater. 1800SF 2 baths/2 kitchens.

What does it mean if its the solenoid? Do i need to replace immediately? It's been like this for over a year now. With the unit cover on, the clicking is very faint so i never really paid attention to it.

Re: Navien Tankless H/W Heater Clicking Sound Help

I don't really have any idea but it sounds like an electronic ignitor clicking to lite a burner to me. Like on gas stove tops and boilers.

My boiler electronic ignition makes that same noise then goes away after few seconds. It may very well be normal. Idk. You have cover off so its louder now. Just my opinion.

As you stated, it's been like that for over a year. Is it functioning normally? any error codes? If everything ok I wouldn't worry about it.

Another suggestion, check owners manual or call navien directly and ask them if it's normal.

the solenoid is an electronic control for that water flow valve...
its either that solenoid or the electronic flow sensor clicking...
wild card is pump check valve but I don't think so...

I get the 15 seconds into video but
when exactly does sound occur:
when water starts flowing from faucet?,
when water stops flowing from faucet?,
or when no water is flowing from a faucet?

so no hot water space heating involved?
no loss or issues with hot water over the year I take it?
Do you have an external (3rd plumbing pipe)
recirculation line connected to underside of unit?
was this new construction or replacement/upgrade?
anyone been inside unit for any service or repairs?
if so; who, what was done, & when?

Peace

If you mean the flow sensor I am thinking of, (inline part with impeller & downstream in the pipeline,) yes, I've had some minor trouble with that, but it's located near the buffer tank, away from the flow adjuster.

Using a DIY stethoscope I traced the clicking to the flow adapter I indicated, which is near the bottom of the unit.

I get the 15 seconds into video but
when exactly does sound occur:
when water starts flowing from faucet?,
when water stops flowing from faucet?,
or when no water is flowing from a faucet?

It occurs after I turn the faucet on, and continues after I turn it off for a bit. I'd say it keeps going a little longer after I turn off faucet and the ventilation cycle completes. When the burner is offline (when I disconnected the flow sensor) it still makes the noise. It's seems to be part of a cycle. If I turn the unit off and on, it will make the noise after starting up.

so no hot water space heating involved?

no

no loss or issues with hot water over the year I take it?

no, t seems to be operating just fine.

Do you have an external (3rd plumbing pipe)
recirculation line connected to underside of unit?

no external recirc.

was this new construction or replacement/upgrade?
anyone been inside unit for any service or repairs?
if so; who, what was done, & when?

This was a new install on a new plumbing system on a full reno.
It was always a bit temperamental especially in the early days but really no complaints for 5+ years.

Replaced the O ring on the condensation drain about 6 months ago.
3-4 years ago, buffer tank check valve and flow sensor were replaced by technician.

except the flow sensor will probably need to be replaced. Not ruling out this is related, but the sound really doesn't seem to be coming from here.

Thanks!

were both flow sensor & check valve
replaced together or at separate times?

What issue(s) did you have initially from unit?
& did that problem/fix involve water flow issues?
I would talk to Navien & tell them what is occurring...
there is diagnostics with multi-meter for electronics

if may be just getting noisey; but worst case -
that solenoid/servo for flow adjustment valve is either
tired & potentially going bad, there is debris in it,
or its electrical (& or control board) in nature...
I would recommend you find out what the service reps think
(Probably cant email or text that video to them)
& ask what a kit for replacing (flow) solenoid/servo costs
& or replacing entire flow valve will cost you...

Consider/Maybe go ahead & get the parts recommended from
tech support just in case you want to be prepared or proactive...
be sure & order a new inlet filter as that costs is nil
since you would already be paying for S&H...

Edit: it might still be a flow sensor sending erroneous signals?
be sure to find that out or order an extra/replacement for future

Peace

Awesome and amazing advice. Thanks for taking the time.

TBH I can't remember. I believe the flow sensor and check valve were replaced at the same time, but I recall the issue was with the latter, and maybe they just replaced the flow sensor it in advance (unfortunately it was replaced with the old, plastic part )

Aside from the parts, I think some of the early problems were related to water/gas flow from the original pre-reno pipes. We installed the unit with the old pipes, then replace the pipes 6 months later. Worked relatively perfectly after this.

I've already talked to Navien about the issue and they said someone would have to come out. I'll see about getting some of the parts replaced. I can see the repair bill getting pretty high, so I have not ruled out getting a new unit soon. Gonna make a pot about this in fact.

Once again, thank you and peace to you!
