Mystery damp spot in carpet above crawl space

We just bought this 1986 house and this morning noticed a fairly damp 3x4 inch spot in the carpet in the living room, which is above a wood frame foundation with crawl space below.

It was not dog pee and it smelled neutral. There is no ceiling drip.

I've gone through probably 12 paper towels on the spot but it's still damp (not soaking, but damp enough to keep making paper towels damp).

I noted the location then went into the crawl space under the damp area. It was near some heating ducts but there is no water evidence in the wood in the crawl space, except maybe a 2-3 feet away near a water softener (see photo) but this looks like old water damage. I see no pipes in the vicinity that are dropping down from that area. The water softener pipes are under the wood and visible. There is no visible dripping on crawl space floor.

There is a washer about 20 feet away in the added-on area.

I'm wondering is it possible the previous owner ran the washer drain pipe ABOVE the wooden floor frame but UNDER the carpet? My thinking is if that old damage is nearby, there must be a pipe above that wood that leaked at some point.

If I have to call somebody out, they'll need to cut at least three feet across into our carpet to lift it to where the dampness is at.

Thoughts?

Look up on the roof in that area to see if there's a sewer vent in that area, if so get up there and see if the rubber boot to seal it is shot.
If so it's a simple less then $10.00 fix.

There is a sewer vent on the roof but it's about 15' from that area, so it could not possibly leak down to there, right?

The seal is shot, but I have a bag over it currently. Still, that's 15' away from this damp spot.

Water can't flow up hill. So unless there is a pipe below spraying under pressure the water has to come from above.

So maybe there are pipes down there connected to the roof vent, but the roof vent leaks are dripping downhill to that spot? Just so odd that it's soaking upward into the carpet.

Regardless, I plan on buying a boot kit for the vent. It started snowing two days ago so perhaps that is related.

As part of my personal improvement program of accepting my faults with grace, I confess I believe this post was entirely based on some snow my dog dragged in and caused to melt into the carpet.

Must have been a heck of a lot of snow for the subfloor to be stained as depicted. Tell your dog to wipe his feet before he comes in.

I should have clarified this is my theory. Those stains are old but present, so this could very well happen again when it's not snowing and then I can salvage some of my pride.

Please don't tell us you live in the Bahamas. That would blow it.
