Kitchen Drain clogged - Snake got into the kitchen

My Kitchen drain clogged. For the first time, I want to clean myself and I used hydrostar power drain cleaner from the clean out, right outside the kitchen.

I spent almost 3 hours and it was going very very slowly.. but at the end I figured out that it did not go through the drain line towards the main drain line but instead it did get into kitchen towards faucet and broke one of the "P" traps.

How do we know where the drain cleaner is going ? How can I avoid such problems in the future ?

Re: Kitchen Drain clogged - Snake got into the kitchen

#1, Do not use a toxic drain cleaner, little late for that now.
I would have started by removing the trap under the sink and cleaning it out.
Next I would have ran a snake down the drain where it enters the wall making sure it want down not up into the vent line.
The way it is now your going to be working around a chemical that can cause skin burns and can blind you if it gets in your eye.

Re: Kitchen Drain clogged - Snake got into the kitchen

Had a similar problem. Kitchen sink clogged during dishwasher cycle. Tried to plunge it with no success. Pulled the trap, found no clog. Had a 25' drain auger and ran it to the max, no joy. Called in a plumber who broke out a machine auger. He had to feed over 40 ft of snake before clearing the clog. Still not sure what clogged the pipe as nothing came back when he pulled the snake.

My point is sometimes you just have to call in a professional.

I think the OP is talking about this: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...+drain+cleaner

Not a chemical drain cleaner.

Most of those clean outs are a Double clean out.

Meaning that there should be two caps in the line in a row, the closer one to the house goes to the street, the farther one goes inside.

Did you use the correct access point?

If it's a single clean out fitting I can see one of two things causing the snake to go the wrong direction. The clean out fitting was installed 180 wrong or there was a T installed rather than a clean out fitting.

Thank you for all your responses.

Yes. It is not a chemical drainer and it is a powered drain cleaner with 50 feet long cable.
I have only one clean out and this is the clean out used by the professional in the last two or three times when the kitchen is clogged out.

I am calling a professional tomorrow to see whats wrong and figure it out the problem.

Re: Kitchen Drain clogged - Snake got into the kitchen

I used my hot water pressure washer. It puts out 3,000 PSI, with a zero nozzle and 160 F water. I do not have a sewer nozzle, nor do I have the 1/8" hose. So I made do with a 15 nozzle and made a short 3/8 ID x 25 foot hose, connected to my gun. I pulled the brass plugs out of the sewer pipe. Dee ran the gun, I pushed and pulled the hose. 3,000 PSI and 160F makes that **** move right along. And, I did not have to rent the snake or the jetter.

Video starts with a cable, then 5 minutes in they use a jetter.

Many times it's better to use a hose and weenie (drain clearing bladder) to clear a clog. The trick is finding a hose that's not too flexible or too rigid.
