How to prepare drain for tile shower

I tore out a fiberglass shower stall and will be replacing it with a tile shower. The drain is sticking out of a roughly 1'x1' hole in the concrete. What's the best way to deal with this hole and the drain before adding pre-slope? Do I need to mix quikcrete to fill in the hole and make it level with the floor? Can I just fill the hole with what I use for the pre-slope?

I assume before I fill the hole, with either quikcrete or pre-slope, that I need to cut the drain pip so the bottom flange of the drain (like the one pictured) will be flush with the concrete floor before any pre-slope, is that correct?

ya if it is all concrete fill it in so its level. But first you will want to attach the drain with the right glue(abs or pvc), figuring out the right height so that the bottom/widest flange sits on top of the subfloor(concrete in this case). You can be a little high (1/8 to 1/4) since the pre slope can be fenagled under it to create solid backing. then you will do your preslope and lay down the shower liner.

Got it done tonight. Drain might be slightly high, but I can just put a little more pre-slope down.

Thanks for the help.
