Measure and cut two 3/4" copper pipe stubs and sweat them into 3/4" male threaded fittings. Let cool and install them into the ball valve with pipe dope and teflon tape. Wrap the ball valve with a wet rag and sweat the unit into the pipes for the water heater. I do the same thing for replacing the main shut off valve for the house.

It happened to two valves. Lucky the store has a good return policy. I will get the threaded ones next time.

I think they are cheaply made big box valves.

It might be a cheap valve. A good one should cost $10 or so.
They weren't cheap. $12 each.
