Hole forming in yard near septic pump tank

Recently we noticed the ground beside the pump tank is caving slowly. I slid the cover off and, sure enough, it's right where the discharge line goes out to the drain field. Is it safe to assume the line is leaking at that spot which is causing the ground to become soft and cave? I can dig down to it, but if it is a leak, what is the best way to remedy this?

Might not know until you dig it out.
It could be a break in the line or a separation of the components.
The fix would be different for each of those cases.

Fix it soon. You are washing dirt in to you leach field. It will clog it up and you are looking at a large $$$.

If the leak is from the discharge line, how is dirt getting pulled into the line and sent to the leach field?

Re: Hole forming in yard near septic pump tank

I dug it up and triggered the pump. I didn't see any leak whatsoever, so now i am wondering if it was forming from rain runoff. It just seemed odd that the caving was forming directly over the discharge pipe.

New system?
May be as simple as just the soil settling.

Almost 30 years old. But we have had some massive amounts of rain over the last month.

Post a picture so we can see what your seeing.
Uncovered the distrbution box to make sure the cover is not broken?
That old a system it could be Tarra Cotta tile, or Orange Burge leach lines.
Both will fail over time.

I'll admit I have zero idea where the box would be.
