Help, my water heater is scaring me!

Hi all, I need a lot of help. My water heater is terrifying me. Our kitchen floor was really hot in front of the fridge, and when we traced the source, the two copper pipes coming from the top of my gas water heater are burning hot to the touch plus a valve on the side of the heater is burning hot to the touch. There is no smell of gas in the house. I am so scared it is going to explode, and I run a rabbit rescue out of my basement where the water heater and my bunnies are. Can anyone please tell me what is going on or what I have to do? Im so scared!!!!!

Run some water over a thermometer under the faucet, there's no need for it to be any higher then 120 deg.
If it's to high every water heater has knob to adjust the temperature on the front of the heater.
Anytime waters ran the outlet lines are going to get hot.

OK I just ran the bathroom faucet and the hot tap is super burning hot, definately more than 120 degrees. We are going to run down and see how we turn the temp down. We have no clue how to do that. And, yes, my momma did just take a bath so maybe this is why. But, shes done that before and this has never happened.

Turn it off.

There should be a control valve on the front, lower part of the water heater. On top of the control valve there should be a small knob labeled on/pilot/off turn that to off, If there is a valve on the gas pipe that leads to the control valve, turn that off too. Then call in a pro and have it checked out.

You can leave the hot water running to get things cooled down.

How do I turn the temp down? Were reading the instructions on the heater and it just tells us how to relight the pilot light.

You can turn it down by adjusting the setting on the gas control module. They are all a little different but look something like this; If it's electric it will have something similar, check your manual. All that information will be there.

If no manual, google or post model number and someone will look it up for you. Thanks.

Re: Help, my water heater is scaring me!

I'm wondering now, since we turned down the temp on the water heater, the kitchen floor in front of the freezer is still really warm. So we felt the vent area at the bottom of the freezer where the water filter is and theres warm air blowing out of that. Im wondering if its the freezer thats the problem the whole time and not the water heater after all. I'll post that question in the appliance forum

Didn't realized there were two posts. Sorry.

Yes, It's possible your fridge is causing your kitchen floor to be warm not your water heater. Probably the coils just need a good vacuuming/cleaning. Some are located on the back and some are located on the bottom of the fridge. Sounds like yours are located on the bottom.

She has three post going on at the same for some reason.
Not sure how the water heater being to hot and a refrigerator got tied in together.
Any A/C or Ref. has hot air blowing out, that's how it transfers the heat from the inside to the outside.
