Help with attaching bathroom drain pipe. Metal slip nut?

Hi guys,

I am brand new to the forum as a member but have been using the advice here for a little while now. I have been renovating my bathroom and a bunch of articles have really helped me.

So I have gotten to the step of installing my vanity and drain but I am not sure what is on the end of the pipe coming out of the wall. Based on some research it looks like a metal slip joint nut. The previous owners of the house just pretty much had a piece of pvc inserted into the drain and it was no attached to anything.

I was just wondering if you guys could help me with the best way to attach a pvc p-trap drain into this.

Thanks!

@nstaab1 welcome aboard! Can you scrap off the paint next to the wall (on the pipe)?
My hunch is another compression nut is there, or a lead joint. Let's hope for the nut....
