Grout Preventing Shower Faucet Stem Removal

I am replacing the stems and seats of a 40 plus year old two handle shower faucet. The cold water stem is surrounded by grout, see photos below.

I was just going to take a rotary tool with a grinding bit, and grind away the grout away from the fitting. If anyone has any other ideas or has dealt with this in the past, I would appreciate the advice.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

What you are experiencing is standard for replacing old stems. Keep grinding...

Re: Grout Preventing Shower Faucet Stem Removal

Thanks SHR Plumber. The other stem was grout-free and replaced in a couple of minutes.

When I do get the grout removed, and the stem replaced, will it be necessary to replace the grout? Maybe the grout was placed their for reinforcement? I was thinking that way because the hole for the stem is not centered in the tile, but instead is bordered by the vertical and horizontal corner edges of the tile.
