Gas header leak

My gas company put a sticker on the door of my building (recently purchased) saying there is a header leak.

I walked around the building and onto all the floors and couldnít smell any leaks. Iím Assuming they mix an odor detecting substance into the gas.

I called the company and they didnít have any insightful information. They told me to call back Tuesday.

Any idea on what I should look for?

Thanks

Re: Gas header leak

They turned the gas off at the meter, so you wouldn't be smelling anything. You'll probably see a lock on the meter(s) preventing them from being turned on until after an inspection.

Re: Gas header leak

The date is 12/22 which was Friday. I don't think it has anything to do with payment. The header will be in the cellar.

Re: Gas header leak

Just Spoke with the seller and apparently the gas company was trying to get into the basement to seize the meters. The seller refused to let them in.

Itís a 3 family and my hunch is 2 out of 3 prior tenants owe money on their meter and never paid. The seller was paying on the 3rd meter. So the gas company shut the meter off from the outside and put that sticker on my building to get me to call them.

Re: Gas header leak

It may be that local laws or company policy prevents a lock-out for arrears either this time or year or below a certain temperature, so they invented a safety cause.

Re: Gas header leak

Yeah Guap - both the seller and gas company are being sneaky. Fortunately there is money in escrow to ensure Iím made whole.

Re: Gas header leak

You might want to go to the record room of the local civil court to see what you can find. Some courts have a bank of computers opened to the public & workers there to help.
