Garbage disposal shakes counters

I just installed a new garbage disposal myself and I'm afraid I might have done something wrong. There is no leaking whatsoever, but the entire countertop often shakes for a few seconds when I turn the disposer on. I'm wondering if I may have put on a unit that is too powerful? The unit is a 1hp Waste King that I purchased based on good reviews in consumer reports without stopping to think if 1hp was too much. The counter is laminate. I'll post some pictures if anyone thinks it would be helpful to diagnose the problem.

Thanks in advance,

I'd suggest removing the unit from the underside of the sink and the plumbing, then turn it on and feel for vibration. If it shakes or vibrates hard when it isn't mounted then I'd take it back. It should run reasonably smoothly and it certainly shouldn't shake the sink, plumbing or countertops.

You may find that the problem is the sink thickness. If you have a 22 gauge stainless sink and a 1 HP disposal, it may be causing flex. I also agree that it may be the disposal itself.
If you have never made a mistake, you haven't done much.

Re: Garbage disposal shakes counters

I have the same problem with my waste king. I bought the 2600 model, 1/2hp. If the disposal is empty it runs smooth and quiet but if there is any garbage along with it being full of water, its shakes the entire counter top until its nearing being empty. then it runs smooth and quiet again. I'm wondering if the discharge pipe is too small and the unit it trying to push too much, to fast through it causing the disturbance. If so, any suggested fixes?
