Dishwasher not draining !!!!!

My wife has almost had it!!

This Kenmore Ultra Wash HE dishwasher keeps failing to drain. She'll clean out the drain pipes using vinegar and baking soda, and she'll have to do it about 4-5 times!!!! Even then, it only drains properly for about a few weeks. She is experienced, she is not leaving heavy food particles on dirty dishware.

Any idea's about this dang thing?

BTW - This might be an aggravator to the problem: The dishwasher is in an island. I ran the drain hose through the floor beneath the dishwasher, along the joists (in basement) towards the kitchen sink drain, then up through the floor again. There is it tied into the standard drain "Y" fitting above the sink's trap. Total length of hose is about 12'.

Re: Dishwasher not draining !!!!!

When you fill the kitchen sink to the top does it drain fast and free or does it slow drain?

If it slow drains you need to clear the sink drain with a snake.

I'm only saying this because you said baking soda and vinegar made it work for a while. I assumed you used this on your kitchen sink drain.

Not sure what is in your install instructions, but this is a quote from the install instructions for a Kenmore dishwasher I found online. This is mentioned a couple times in the manual.
"• The dishwasher must be installed so that drain hose is no more
than 10 feet in length for proper drainage."

Thanks Ghostmaker for the comment. Actually, she puts vinegar/baking soda in the bottom of the empty dishwasher and runs it through a cycle, not the kitchen sink. She's done this before and it works great as a safe pipe cleaner as you CANNOT use drano.

That sounds like a giant "S" or running trap. A place for all debris and food particles to settle. After the dish washer pump shuts off, all water and anything else in the line stays there until you use the dishwasher again.

Suggest you Google "island plumbing" and properly plumb the drain line to the island.

Re: Dishwasher not draining !!!!!

@KC Jones - Thanks for that. I am a little long on that, I know.....I am around 12' or so. Weird thing is, this unit has worked ok for about 3 years, then it just stopped regularly draining. It would only drain if I dragged in a air hose from the garage's compressor and blew out the line from the dishwasher.

@hkstround - You were bang on right!!!!! Today, I took the whole dang thing apart and blew out every piece except the factory drain loop fastened to the side of the dishwasher....I NEVER thought IT could get clogged. Guess what? THAT was the culprit. When I blew out that factory corrugated drain loop hose, a bunch of nasty stuff came out! It runs/drains GREAT now....wifey is happy. You know what they say, happy wife=happy life.

Re: Dishwasher not draining !!!!!

It's most likely getting clogged because of routing or length or both. It's going to happen again, you aren't out of the woods yet. hkstroud has a good idea.

Re: Dishwasher not draining !!!!!

After the impressive bubbly, fizzy initial reaction of the baking soda / vinegar for cleaning, all that remains is a salt water solution. To me that's not much of a cleaning solution.
