Delta 1970 Tub Faucet Leaking

I've read several posts but not sure how to figure out what model I have.

The faucet is leaking but I'm sure it's the handle given that the faucet is just the conduit for water to the tub. The diverter is on the faucet, not the handle.

The house was built in 1972 and all fixtures are original.

Also, I have a general knowledge of plumbing and can replace sink faucets and put in toilets but is this project something I should tackle?

If not, and I need a plumber (I have a great one but he's very busy) what can I do part wise to help before he gets here? Without turning off the water, can I remove the cover to see what's behind it? I can turn off water - it's at the street level and I have the key.

Pics attached and thanks ahead of time.

Karen

Consider using the Delta help site for your DIY project. I've not been there but it looks promising and there is a 800 number. I'm not sure if they will allow you to send pictures.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Is the leak for several hours (short time) after a shower.

It could be just a leaky diverter valve letting the shower riser drain out after a shower.

Or, it's a delta cartridge, which will be reltively easily replaceable...

Probably easiest method is to go to delta site to determine the model number, chase down at HD/Lowes/plumbing shop the new cartridge... and follow site directions for replacement of cartridge.

I have tried that, and I haven't heard back from them for a week.

I did find the patent #s though
2592062
3056418

Basically anti-siphon diverter valve

So I leaks from the tub spout when you are having a shower?

Water is leaking from the faucet started out as a drip, now more of a very small but steady stream. I can pull up on the diverter handle and tie it to the handle above and most of the time the water stops dripping.

See my answer to another responder about the leaking but it is constant. Delta, so far that I can tell, no longer has the find a model option on their customer support page. Their instructions say they do and I mentioned it in my comments to them.

So you're pretty confident that this would be an easy fix should I be able to tell the model?

Can I tell what kind of cartridge I need by taking off the cover/handle?

So when you stop it like that you are just filling the pipe up to the valve.
You should be able to remove the handle and escutcheon to see which mixing valve you have.

I would think if you tell your plumber that your 1970s delta single lever bath valve is dripping He will know what he needs to fix it.

Haven't noticed that. It leaks when it supposedly is shut off.

Hahaha I thought as much about filling up the pipe.

OK, another waiting game for Johnny Electric (my plumber).

Thanks!
