cold water line to a gas Hw heater

I just "uninstalled" a gas hot water heater from a friend's place.
the Cold water intake line was a bit troublesome to disconnect (it wouldn't just unscrew) and in the end the copper line above the heater snapped and so we could remove the whole unit.
but, what remained in the tank was just loose. a Loose hanging white plastic tube.

I am wondering now if I "broke" something off in my brutish removal tactics.

Or, does that cold water feed line just normally hang loose into the tank?

(but if so, what drives the hot water back up and through the system?)

Or is this supposed to be a closed system, where everything - cold water feed, HW tank, HW out - is supposed to be water tight? (In which case I have to go in an reconnect the cold some how.)

In the future use unions or flex connectors

a Loose hanging white plastic tube.
called a 'dip tube'
it sends the fresh cold water to the bottom

The dip tube is usually set into or attached to a fitting or a nipple. Sounds like yours has popped or snapped off.

Replacement dip tubes are usually available from a supplier.

Re: cold water line to a gas Hw heater

well now I know.
on closer inspection, at the top of the Dip Tube there is a fitting threaded on both sides, top and bottom.
I had just managed to unthread the bottom section, from the top of the tank itself.
just need to tape it and rethread it in.

Thanks for the help as always.
