Question

Clog?

Bear with me as I have very little plumbing experience.

I noticed last night the smell of sewer gas coming from my basement drain and my sump pump was pumping out quite a bit of water, which is very strange for my house in the dead of winter.

After some investigation I realized my basement bathroom toilet doesn't flush. It just fills up with water, then slowly drains completely empty after waiting an hour or so.

Main floor bathrooms work fine, but every time I flush or use the shower on the main floor, that's when my sump pit starts to fill.

My uneducated guess is a clog in the main line, past the point of the basement bathroom, which causes the water from the upstairs bathroom to make its way into pipe that feeds the sump pit.

Thoughts?

That would be my thoughts as well. What kind of pipe? Pvc, cast iron? How old is pipe going to city sewer?
