Chinese Tankless off eBay - NON POTABLE???

I recently purchased a 24kw/3.2Gpm Lpg tankless for C$200 shipped and imported. Ebay # 201731789713

I live off the grid, so having the natural draft flue and battery igniter was a plus to save precious solar power.

When thumbing through the cryptic and confusing chinglesh "manual" it clearly states that the heated water is not for drinking.

So did the pricks use lead solder, or maybe the solder flux is toxic? Do USA made units also state this by anyone's recollection?

Does this unit have any ULC listing on it?
I don't think I would ever install something like that in my home if it doesn't.

I think potable water is probably the least of your worries.

Re: Chinese Tankless off eBay - NON POTABLE???

I've never seen one that wasn't for portable water, but then again I also didn't see one that was that cheap either. It's clearly not modulating or anything.

I have no idea what they used in their construction, but the major companies selling in this market follow the rules. (electrical, gas, plumbing and potable water aspects. There's a lot of safety devices in modern devices.)

It at least looks like its spark ignition and a plus. It may even be a plate style cross heat exchanger. The venting probably won't match anything that you'll find locally. Make sure that you use special metal venting if using it inside. (B-vent is not suitable) Use aluminum venting if it's all outside.

Cheers!

When I looked at the item you bought, it's a set that includes a shower head. It's a style of shower water heater very common in Asia, Europe and Latin America. I think I also saw similar shower water heaters in New Zealand.

Anyway, I think the "heated water is not for drinking" reminder is because the heater is intended to heat shower water. The manufacturer doesn't intend for you to modify it to heat your whole house water supply or your kitchen cooking and drinking water. There's probably no health hazard but then, I've only ever used water heaters like that for showering. Haven't encountered any modified for kitchen use.

It's a heat (energy) measurement. kJ is another, but for heating they seam to like kW.

I always thought you weren't supposed to cook with or drink water from any hot water tap because the hot water could leech bad things out of the pipes anyway.

I haven't heard that before, but I have heard that you should run cold water for a few minutes in the morning if your house has copper plumbing that was put in when lead solder was still allowed.

I stopped cooking with hot water after the first time I drained down a water heater.

I haven't heard that it's a health risk, though. Maybe in really old houses or something but I'm sure that for a long time the material specs would demand that the pipes not contaminate water regardless of its temperature.

Hence the difference between potable and non -potable specifications.

That's quite possible. High temp generally accelerates chemical reactions. Leeched compounds/molecules will depend on the pipe material and age (extent of corrosion), among others.

I have an instant hot water heater under the sink with a 5/8-gal stainless steel tank. Filtered water feeds into it. The heater tank is then connected to a hot/cold water dispenser faucet. That's my source of drinking/cooking hot/room-temp water. It's easy to flush out the entire content of the tank. I suppose the hot water in the tank is cleaner than hot water that has to flow through the usual house water supply pipes - what are they? Copper or galvanized iron?
