Can I replace packing nut on shutoff without turning building water off?
I've replaced stems and packing nuts in toilet and sink shutoff valves before in my house, turning the main house valve off first.
My Mom lives in a condo and one of her Brasscraft multi-turn shutoffs is leaking from the stem where it exits the packing nut. I've already tried tightening the packing nut. I have a replacement packing nut (with packing washer in it) ready to go.
The problem is the building maintenance guy says he can't turn the water off just to her unit, but would have to turn it off to a whole section of the building.
If I make sure the valve is closed, remove the handle, and carefully remove the packing nut without also turning the stem, can I get away with not turning the water off? Or will I have water spraying out no matter how careful I am? Thanks.
