Yes, the advantage of this setup is that the flex on the tub does compress the gasket to form an even tighter seal. But other than that the seal is formed when you screw the drain into the threaded drain shoe.

As for getting my gasket in, when I removed the wood (which was holding the drain tightly) I was able to get enough wiggle room to slide the gasket in from up top.

After 7 1/2 hours not a drop of water has escaped. I used GE 100% Silicon on the drain lip.
