80 gallon hot water storage tank?

Moving to a new house that has an on-demand water boiler. There are 4 zones for baseboard heat and the 5th zone goes to an 80 gallon water storage tank? I thought the whole purpose of on demand was so that standing hot water is never sitting around wasting energy? Yes I have read about a ten gallon tank being used for high demand situations.

But 80 gallons always being heated? When that water starts to cool down how does it get heated again? does it recycle through the gas boiler or is there a heating element in the tank? I definitely see that the tank has a thermostat on it. Is 80 gallons over-kill? Or should I be thrilled its there already.

Ayuh,.... I'm guessin' yer 80 gallon tank has a heatin' coil in it that heats the DHW, as heatin' water shouldn't be used for domestic hot water,....

Right.. the baseboard heat water is direct from the "boiler".. No the 80 gallon tank definitely gets fed from that boiler also. The system looks exactly like a tankless system that has a tank in between as I've seen online. but I haven't seen on with 80 gallon tank!

You are thinking about this wrong. You have a boiler that also makes DHW. This is different from having an on demand water heater for your DHW. You never want to mix the 2 and for that reason you have what you have. Those 80 gallon tanks are typically super insulated and with that setup you will have tons of hot water available.

The 80 gal tank is likely your DHW storage tank. Typically you'll have 4 pipes going to that tank. However, we can check with the model of your boiler, and/or some pictures.

The DHW is only for your hot tap water not your heating system. The heating system would be completely on demand.

Cheers!
