Stripping wall

I'm currently stripping multi layers of wallpaper off and have come across what looks like black paint with a dark silver metal substance underneath it. Not sure what it is - any ideas?
Its on a wall that has an external chimney, so was unsure whether its a damp proof coating from the past? We believe the house was built in the 50's?

Cheers

Re: Stripping wall

Sounds like some sort of heat resistant paper. Is it over the entire wall with the chimney, or just around the fireplace opening?
