Help with wainscotting install in kitchen

Hello i picked up some wainscotting today and I noticed that there is a bigger and a smaller piece on either end of it how do i know what side goes up and what side goes to the bottom? Does it matter? Also can this be installed right on top of my baseboard heating? Any information would be great
Thank you
