Tile on subfloor or on slab?

Looking to replace basement flooring that is currently carpeted (yuck), with plywood subfloor over the grey dimpled moisture barrier underlayment. I’m planning to lay natural stone tiles. Should I demo out the subfloor and work from the slab, or just put a CBU layer on the plywood and tile on that?

I would not leave anything that mold could live on under tile. Just a minor flood like water tank or washer from anywhere in the house would cause huge problems. You can't just remove it like you could the carpet to let it dry out.

Yeah, I was thinking more about the stability/durability of the installation but that is a good point too. We have never had water issues in the basement but it only takes one time to ruin it.
