tar like substance on my tile?

Hello! A few years ago we bought a Queen Anne Victorian that was built in 1876. The previous owners have done a great job maintaining it, but the bathroom was looking a little, umm, dated. So my husband and I took up the tile floor (not original) and found this amazing original hexagon white marble tile floor underneath! The problem is that it covered in a black, tar like substance that so far has been impossible to get off. Does anyone have any suggestions? It seems a shame to tile over it, but I'm afraid we have no other options. Thank you for your suggestions!

Kerosene will probably cut it. I can remember removing some with kerosene probably 30 years ago. It is most likely cutback adhesive which contains asbestos.

Goo-B-gone, Orange Citrus based cleaners. Check with local companies that do tile cleaning. They may have something a lot safer then petro based.
